Lake Maggiore: discover the picturesque Fishermen’s Island

Dear friends, welcome to My Own Italy to discover Italy with my personal touch!

Our travel today is to Piedmont, to Lake Maggiore, where we can discover one of the most picturesque island of our country: the Fishermen's Island!

Let's move from Baveno and go to the small pier that will welcome us to the island.

The small stretch of water that separates the Fishermen's Island from the shores of Lake Maggiore offers us the chance to admire the verdant stretch of coast that surrounds the Borromean Islands, being enchanted by the magnificent villas that overlook Lake Maggiore. Isola Superiore, also called 'Isola dei Pescatori' because of the historical work of its inhabitants, is located north of Isola Bella, from which it is separated only by a small island, quite a rock, known as "the Malghera ". With its 100 meters wide by 350 long Fishermen's Island is the smallest of the Borromean Islands (the largest one is Isola Madre). Inhabited during all the year, the island houses a small village where fifty inhabitants live, and are concerned with fishing and tourism; the village is characterized by a small square surrounded by narrow winding streets that lead to the promenade on the northern tip of the island. The village is characterized by a small square surrounded by narrow winding streets that lead to the promenade on the northern tip of the island.

The houses are so characteristic: they have many plans to allow you to make the most of the limited space available, they are almost all equipped with long balconies indispensable for drying fish. Indeed the fishing industry is still much practiced, and you can enjoy fresh fish in one of the many restaurants overlooking the lake. Unmissable the walk along the little market that sells local handicrafts attracting numerous tourists. On the island you will find local shops and popular restaurants where you can taste dishes of freshly caught fish.

The parish church of Isola Pescatori is located in a small square in the village; the interior is characterized by three blind arches, decorated with rows of bricks and lit by three windows. Here we can admire frescoes of the of the sixteenth century and the seventeenth-century altar with the busts of four bishops, too.

On the Fishermen's island there are several events that can not be missed, and that take palce during the year.

Your visit to the Fishermen's Island will be more pleasant if you can relax in a truly elegant and refined hotel: I suggest the Grand Hotel Dino; also, you can certainly taste the traditional piedmont cuisine in the restaurant Last Hall.

Leisure me: this is my tourism!
