b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4031-640x480.jpgMy friends, welcome to My Own Italy to discover Italy with my personal touch!

Our travel today is to Emilia Romagna where, after admiring the stunning mosaics of Ravenna, we can discover another characteristic medieval villageLugo.

So, let's enter immediately into the history of this town passing through Este Castle (Rocca Estense), evidence of a  strategic and commercial past.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4027-640x480.jpg The history of Lugo begins since the Neolithic period.

The first nucleus of the City of Lugo, located in correspondence of the intersection between the roads originated from the Roman centuriation, has been documented since the tenth century: a fence, with embankments and palisades, held as a military function and refuge for the rural population.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4042-640x480.jpg In the Middle Ages was built the Rocca Estense, a fortress place at the crossroads of two areas of the Roman, the cardo and the decumano.

The complex was destroyed by the Faentines in 1218 and rebuilt several times in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The main period of development of the fortification corresponds with the domination of the Este (1437-1598, with brief interruptions), during which the characteristics of the defensive were profoundly changed at least twice.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4036-640x480.jpg During the 1800s, a period of great economic prosperity, Lugo was built the Pavaglione. Peculiar and imposing  building, it was started in 1771 by Joseph Campana and completed in 1783 for the important market of the cocoons of the silkworm.

Productions of musical works were realized in this space since the end of '600. The Pavaglione hosts today as in the past, workshops, shops, fairs and the largest market on Wednesday, with its six hundred years of history.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4039-640x480.jpgCharacteristic is the commemoration of the Palio della Caveja, which is organized in the month of May, to remember the passagein the city in 1471 of Borso d'Este, travelling to Rome to receive the imprimatur of the Duke of Ferrara by Pope Paul II: he decided to spend the night in the Castle of Lugo along with its grand and spectacular procession.

People in Lugo were happy and had days of great celebration; they dedicated to their beloved and revered Duke hospitality "of grandeur and unsparingly".

For me it was a really exciting and fascinating experience during my holiday.

Leisure with me, this is my tourism!
