b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0491.JPG My friends, welcome to My Own Italy to discover Italy with my personal touch!

Our travel today is in Emilia Romagna and we are going to discover a very special place: a medieval village with ancient towers, walls and mansions, well known also as the "City of Wine", Bertinoro.

b2ap3_thumbnail_BERTINORO.JPG After spending a day at seaside, perhaps on the beach in  Lido di Classe, or visiting the characteristic street of the Donkeys in Brisighella and after resting in the pretty farm Agriturismo Al Colle  situated in province of Cesena, I suggest you a pleasant walk in the surrounding hills.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Bertinoro-3.jpg So, lets' go to Bertinoro, that we call the "Balcony of Romagna" as you can enjoy a the splendid view from there!

It seems that the name comes from a legendary phrase uttered by Galla Placidia, daughter of the Roman Emperor Theodosius, who taste the wine produced in the area said: "Not so rough glass art worthy, O wine, but drink youi in gold (it: Berti in oro)! ".

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0527.JPG The majestic Fortress of Bertinoro, built around 1000, dominates the citadel from the top of Mount Cesubeo.

In the Fortress stayed Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1177 with his court and his troops; then it became a bishopric since 1584. Even today, the defensive structure remains well preserved its original appearance.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0504.JPG The fortress now houses the University Residential Centre of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna and the Interreligious Museum which offers the possibility to investigate the common aspects of the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam.

b2ap3_thumbnail_COLONNA_DELI_ANELLI.jpg But Bertinoro is known as the "City of Hospitality" par excellence thanks to the fourteenth-century tradition of the Column by the Twelve Rings (or "Column of Anella"), each ring corresponds to one of the twelve families appointed a time to host the stranger, arriving, he tied his horse: this tradition is still evoked on the first Sunday of September.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0534.JPGBertinoro is also famous for its wines and for its cuisine.

The village has also a trail dedicated to wine: the Road of Grape harvest where you can see the story of the cycle of vine through a series of paintings by local artists. It's an ideal must-see fotr your holidays!

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0547.JPG There are many wineries can be visited members of the Wine and Dine Route of Forlì-Cesena where you can taste local wines, Albana and Sangiovese.

The kitchen has plenty of pasta dishes created by the hands of "sfogline", still working the dough with a rolling pin.    Freshly prepared in several kiosks of the village is the piadina typical food of Romagna.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0515-2.JPGAnother typical product of this area is the extra virgin olive oil, characterized by intense yellow color with greenish reflections. The faint fruity smell and flavor of medium sweetness and very low acidity place it among the delicate Ligurian oil and the strong Tuscan and Puglia olive oil. Bertinoro is really a pleasant discovery.
