b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0407.JPGMy friends, welcome to My Own Italy, to discover Italy with my personal touch!

Our travel today is to Emilia Romagna and will go to Cervia.

Cervia is situated near Ravenna and it is immersed in an ancient pine woods that stretches for about 260 hectares.

A well known tourist resort on the Adriatic coast, with its nine kilometers of fine white sand and a  gently sloping sea, Cervia is one of the most famous and popular of the Adriatic Coast seaside

The Cervia's Salt Pans is a paradise for birdwatching lovers and nature photography.

From paths of few hours to those of half or full day, the Salt Pans is interesting for children, teens and adults.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0405.JPG Cervia has its roots in ancient times: the old town in fact stood in the middle of the salt and occupied an area of 20 hectares.

The old Cervia was demolished because of  pressures by the inhabitants, who were decimated by malaria and unhealthy living conditions.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0404.JPG The new Cervia was built in the shape of a rectangle with a perimeter of about 800 meters: the outer part included 48 houses that could accommodate more than 150 families of salt workers, a small hospital, a barracks, a slaughterhouse and the theater.

Just outside the quadrilateral two large salt warehouses were built.

In ancient times, when salt was almost the only method to preserve food, its commercial importance and its value were huge.

The city prospered when the harvest was good and found it hard when the harvest was bad.

The ancient Salt Pans, extended for 827 hectares, as well as guaranteeing a salt production of over 200,000 tons, are a nature reserve where many species of birds nest and where passing the pink flamingos.

Southern station of the Po Delta River Regional Park, Cervia’s Salt Pan is appreciated because of its high environmental and landscape values, insomuch as to be included in the Ramsar Agreement as Wetland of International Importance.

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0389.JPGFirst to adopt water purifiers, Cervia has won several major awards reflecting the care and attention given to the environment, including the Blue Flag award, which identifies the best Italian beaches.

Leisure me: this is my tourism!
